1984: A new kind of basketball shoe
Designer Jacques Chassaing set out to build adidas's flagship basketball shoe. The result was the Forum, a high-top built around one radical idea: a criss-cross ankle strap that locked players in and protected them from the cuts and pivots the game demanded.
The strap wasn't hidden inside. Chassaing placed it on the outside, making the innovation visible. The Forum looked unlike anything else on the court, and players noticed.
The goal was simple: protect the athlete and make that protection impossible to ignore.

Beyond the hardwood
The Forum stopped being just a basketball shoe the moment it left the court. Hip-hop artists wore it on album covers. Skateboarders adapted it. Fashion houses reinterpreted it. Four decades after it debuted, the Forum 84 sits at the intersection of sport, music, and style, proving that good design doesn't belong to any one world.
